Remember dark themes? There was a time where it felt like we were writing about dark themes being added to new apps every day. Android 10 brought a system-wide dark mode toggle and many apps implemented support for it pretty quickly. Google Drive has a dark theme, but the accompanying Docs, Sheets, and Slides apps don’t. That appears to be finally changing.
A teardown of the latest Google Docs app by 9to5Google reveals introductory strings for an upcoming dark theme release. Assets for dark themes were added to Docs, Sheets, and Slides a few weeks ago, but it’s now looking like the apps are getting ready to use them. The dark theme applies to the document browser and the actual editor view in Docs and Sheets (changing the background color is already a common function in Slides). Here are screenshots of the settings and main UI of Docs, Sheets, and Slides that we took after manually enabling the dark theme option in each apps’ settings pages.
In addition, Google is preparing to add support for theming documents, slides, and sheets. Google calls the dark theme in the document editor “dark mode canvas.” Users can quickly preview how things look in the light theme from the menu. While we don’t have screenshots ourselves of the dark document viewer, Twitter user and developer Alessandro Paluzzi was able to enable the dark theme in the document editor for Docs (below) and Sheets.

The dark theme for Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides was spotted in version 1.20.242.2 of each app, but it’s not visible yet for users. This is likely coming in a server-side switch. Anyone who does late-night writing and editing is about to be very happy.
