Huawei and Xiaomi in Talks with AT&T and Verizon to Carry Phones in 2018

Chinese smartphone makers Huawei and Xiaomi have been pretty selective in the markets they've chosen to focus their attention. So far, Xiaomi's been doing very well in China and India, whereas Huawei has been seeing great success in Europe and China. But both are reportedly turning their attention to a new frontier: The United States. According to Bloomberg, the two smartphone makers are currently in talks with AT&T and Verizon Wireless to sell phones stateside.

Entering the U.S. smartphone market isn't easy, and it's something that others have tried and failed to do in the past. But both Huawei and Xiamo are well-positioned to take on the U.S.'s cutthroat competition. Huawei has outsold Apple in China, for instance, and Xiaomi's found a niche in low-end and mid-range smartphones.

Xiaomi's reputation for manufacturing high-quality smartphones with faster performance than the competition (and at the same price point) is another point in its favor.  Not every smartphone in its portfolio is a bona fide hit, but its flagship series have a dedicated following.

Huawei, meanwhile, is very popular in its home country of China, and it's been able to break even in European markets. In the U.S., though, where the company sells its devices online and factory unlocked on pre-paid cellular carriers, blockbuster success has eluded it. A few of its most popular devices have reached brick-and-mortar stores like Best Buy recently, but a deal with a major carrier would be a first, and it's something the smartphone maker's been pursuing for years.

The timeline on Xiamoi and Huawei's respective partnerships with AT&T  and Verizon isn't particularly clear, but if all goes smoothly, if might not be long before you see a Mi Max or P10 at your local carrier store.
