OnePlus Hosting “Blind Sale” for OnePlus 3 in China

In a move that you may have seen coming, OnePlus is hosting its first blind sale in China. 1,000 OnePlus 3 devices will be up for sale on the company’s Chinese website on June 6, much before the official unveiling on June 15 (June 14 for the rest of the world). The mystery box will cost CNY 2,999 ($455), albeit this is not the actual price of the device. Customers will be expected to pay the difference if price is higher, or will be given partial refund if price is lower, when the device officially launches.

Halfway in, 2016 is Shaping Out to be Way More Interesting than 2015 for Android Smartphones

The year is halfway done, and we’ve seen a lot what this year in tech has to offer. Most of the big name OEMs have already pitched in their traditional best-player in the market, hoping to secure that coveted spot in our pockets or purses.

Yet for some reason, 2016 feels much unlike 2015, being different in the sentiment that a new smartphone release evokes. Granted, great phones existed in both these years. But I personally found myself getting excited much more frequently this half-year for phones from all sorts of OEMs, big or small. Last year simply did not have the same vibe to it.

So what makes 2016 so different from 2015 in getting consumers and tech enthusiasts beyond the levels of casual curiosity?

To put it bluntly, 2015 was a trainwreck in the Android world. A lot of things broke, and a lot of efforts were initiated to fix these things that were broken. This diverted focus and primary attention from long-term growth to short-term survival. Products struggled, companies struggled, and the final loser was the consumer who had his set of options shrunk down to just a few real ones.

One of the biggest issues with the phones last year happened to be Snapdragon processors. Whether it be the thermally throttling Snapdragon 810, or the plain hot and performance-ineffective Snapdragon 615, both of these made their way onto a large number of devices. The sheer market share between these two processors and the lack of real competition in performance (better processors for their respective price points were not widely available) and usability left little choice for the consumer who cared enough (which included us Android enthusiasts as well). If you wanted to avoid these two processors, the phones that you could purchase and that were still relevant in 2015 shrunk down drastically. MediaTek existed and so did Exynos (although limited to a small handful of devices). But running with these had their own share of limitations and compromises.

Which brings us on to the other recurring theme from 2015: Compromises. It is true that no one device can suit each and every one of us, as it will always be a compromise in one way or another to someone else. But the number of devices which had obvious shortcomings was way too high in 2015. Part of this can be attributed to the gradual transition of the industry in terms of what it can output in a product produced with obsolescence planned beforehand. This meant that more and more products went the other way with regards future proofing: we had more non-removable batteries, and more devices with non-expandable storage. Repairability of devices in general took a hit with more and more devices opting for Glass and Metal or Metallic Unibody constructions. Even battery capacity was not spared in the process of beautification, with precious minutes of usage trimmed away to make your device a fraction of a millimeter thinner.

The compromises in 2015 and the failure to adapt to the changing needs of the masses led to a drop in sales for many OEMs. Profit margins on Android devices thinned out, with several OEMs like LG and HTC even making net losses on handset sales by Q4 2015. The market kept the pressure constant with newer entrants always trying to get a bite of the consumer pie. It was a very sticky situation altogether from a business perspective, since areas like advertising, marketing and after-sales remain comparatively fixed expense areas which are not directly and immediately affected by the drop in sales.

The combined net result from 2015 was that companies had to make changes in their current order of things, if they wished to survive. The old order would not sustain the companies into 2016. Changes had to come, and the factors which contributed to a dismal 2015 had to be done away with. And that is exactly what is happening in 2016….

The newer generation Snapdragons are now appearing on flagship and mid-end devices. The Snapdragon 820 and the Snapdragon 650 have taken up the mantle from their predecessors, and both have enough oomph in them to keep the complaints and the naysayers at bay. Whether it’s because of lowered expectations after witnessing 2015, or whether it actually is because of outstanding results, these SoC’s have performed above expectations. Both seem to be a solid pair to carry over the devices that already do use them as well as those that will in the latter half of 2016.

But simply slapping on a good SoC will not work in favor of OEM’s looking to drastically improve their situations. Their situation was desperate, and they had to dabble into newer territories to maintain their competitive edge. Enter Virtual Reality, which is becoming the next driving factor for Android and Android smartphone hardware.

The state of virtual reality in 2015 was still in its infancy with just a handful of names providing a VR experience. You had the very basic Google Cardboard to wet your feet. But outside of just being a teaser, Google Cardboard had inherent limitations in providing a rich experience. Other mobile VR solutions like Samsung’s Gear VR improved on several factors, but still, naturally could not compete with full VR solutions like the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. In 2016, we see mobile VR looking to play on its consumer friendly advantage by becoming much more widely accessible. Infact, certain phones even in the low-mid end of the market bundled in offers with mobile VR headsets, like the Lenovo Vibe K4 Note which collaborated with ANTVR for the headset.

Google DayDream

With Google kicking things up a notch with DayDream VR, the last few months of 2016 will certainly be a lot more happening for VR. The ZTE Axon 7 is the first Daydream-ready smartphone, sans the Android N update, and we certainly expect a lot more phones to come out with heightened specifications to more than deliver an enriching experience.

If the prospects of Virtual Reality do not excite you, then there’s another area that might pique your curiosity: Modularity!

What was a pipe dream in 2015, came to fruition in 2016 with the launch of the LG G5. Sure, the actual implementation by LG might seem lackluster given the hype buildup and the potential for modularity in general. But one can’t deny that LG’s initiative did spur further interest from OEMs. Even more, it showed the end consumer that we can have one phone serving different needs at different times through the use of modules, which is important from the point of view of giving other platforms a place to jump start their project funding from.

With Project Ara kicking strongly, albeit in a less-modular manner than it was originally intended to be, and a developer-focused device slated for late 2016 release, there is certainly something to be excited about. Then there’s the Lenovo Moto Z and all of its MotoMods, which improves and builds up on the G5-style modularity with the difference being completely externally-attaching modules. These are the products that are being worked on right now, and if they do pick up steam and get widespread consumer interest, we can be sure that more OEMs will jump in.

On the less revolutionary side of things, we are seeing improvements in phones which make them a bit more future proof than their 2015-counterparts. Features that went away in 2015 are making a return, like the microSD card slot. Removable batteries are yet to make a mainstream comeback, but there’s a good chance they won’t, keeping in mind the direction the market is headed to in areas like device dimensions, build materials, planned obsolescence and more.

Newer technologies are also making their way onto phones, with fingerprint sensors and faster charging becoming a pseudo-standard of sorts due to the competitive forces of the market at play, and advancements in software and hardware. There’s increased adoption of the USB Type C standard, and then there’s also renewed attention towards newer and less populated differentiating areas like high-quality Audio DACs.

All in all, 2016 has been a satisfying year so far. We’ve already witnessed some of the highlights of the year, and there’s still a good number of months ahead of us. I am personally excited for the latter half of 2016, for the success of this year will define the direction of the smartphone industry for the next. And so far, it has been very exciting. Let’s hope the future does not disappoint.

The HTC 10: How the Developer Community Radically Improved My Experience

Sometimes it needs a little help to make it truly yours

y 14 day return window drew to a close and I had a decision to make, my HTC 10 hung in the balance.  HTC has always had a soft spot in my heart. Starting with the HTC Incredible and then upgrading the M7 and M8, I have seemed to have a deeply rooted affinity for them.

At its announcement, the HTC 10 drew my eye but I was also overly skeptical of it after the M9, which I skipped for various reasons. I knew deep down, though, I would end up owning the device because for as much criticism as I give the company, I love HTC. The first few days were great and brought back so many memories of the old days with great HTC devices, but all good things must come to an end and my HTC 10 experience quickly began to deteriorate sooner than I might have expected.

Credit where it is due though, the hardware is second to none. From the beautiful beveled edges, glistening chamfers and near perfect mix of materials to the liquid black front and amazing audio experience — one could really only knock the 10 for its lack of waterproofing. The software, though, is where things got a little more complicated. Praised by blogs all around for its Close to Stock Android look and feel (which we disagreed with) I felt like I was being betrayed by everything I had read.

True, the software may look or feel like stock in some ways but don’t be naive: the stock Android feel is little more than a theme. HTC did some deep customization to this software and to make things worse they removed or broke some key features one would expect in Marshmallow. It uses a custom dialer with no lookup features, the SystemUI Tuner and Ambient Display were removed, icons were added or changed for no reason (making for inconsistent iconography), and you couldn’t modify the quick toggles. Few offenses were worse than what HTC did to the lockscreen. Not only did they remove the simple three toggle system most devices have settled on – which works – but they totally broke notifications while playing audio with their second biggest offense, Boomsound.

How is this a usable experience?

Having Boomsound installed on the phone is fine, having a constant notification present advertising “Boomsound with Dolby Audio” while ANY audio is playing regardless as to if it is enabled is beyond words. But it gets worse, due to HTC’s lockscreen modifications if you happen to be playing any audio you can see ZERO new notifications on the lockscreen without interacting with it since slot 1 is taken by the playback controls and slot 2 by this Boomsound advertisement. There just is no valid excuse for this unremovable, overly irritating, and unwanted thorn in my side that breaks proper notification handling. But the proverbial straw that broke the camel’s back was my battery. No matter what I did, I could not make my HTC 10 have good battery. I subscribe to the “I’m not turning any features I want off to save battery” mantra, so wakelocks are a fact of life. But my 10 would last 8-10 hours with about 2 1/2hrs of SOT, totally unacceptable. Add to this the fact that it appears HTC broke the App Standby feature that puts apps into an ‘inactive’ state after no use and the situation was pretty dismal.

So as I was pondering the future of my HTC 10’s existence I thought back on why I loved my prior HTC One M7 and M8 so much and I came to a conclusion. What made the M7 and M8 so great was the developer support from both HTC with bootloader unlocking and the developer community that made it possible to have my phone exactly as wanted.

I decided to go to the XDA forums and see what I could find, what could make me love this phone again, and what happened over the next few hours floored me. The HTC 10 I grew to despise had turned into a beautiful customized beauty with few of the annoyances that bugged me so much, and so much more…


The Changes

This is N-ify on an HTC 10

The first module I installed was N-ify. Featured on the Portal just a few days ago, this app is a must-have for anyone wanting that Android N look. MrWasdennnoch and Paphonb need a solid round of applause, or at least a solid round for their work. At first I didn’t think this mod would work well on the 10, but it turns out that it works almost perfectly, some features don’t enable like the changes to the Recents view or Settings, but it has no UI or functionality glitches. Full width notifications, quick jump to the last app, notification/quick toggle panel, it’s all there and more that I can’t even use due to HTC’s software modifications. Seriously, if you wanted to have your stockish Android device look and feel like N this is the one stop shop and they have more features planned like quick replies and more so be sure to follow the project.

My second issue was with the unremovable Boomsound notification as well as the WiFi calling notification (which is redundant with the status bar icon), they needed to die. After some searching I found XNotifications by Taptigo. The app can be confusing at first, but all you need to do to make it work its magic is to long press a notification and see the options. In my situation, I wanted to remove the Boomsound and WiFi notifications but not stop Android System from sending other notifications,

XNotifications can do just that. Using a series of rules and toggles, XNotifications can block or alter notifications based on a specific filter. For instance, notifications from Android System with the title “HTC Boomsound with Dolby Audio” are blocked, but any other Android System notifications are allowed. Yes, it works just as advertised and yes, it is awesome.

HTC also removed Ambient display and I wanted it back. Thanks to two modules Enable Ambient Display and Ambient Notifications I got that and more. Paired together they not only brought the feature back but allowed me to set it so it only activates when notifications are present, perfect!

Next I came to my crown jewel, Amplify. If you run Xposed and don’t have Amplify I don’t know what’s wrong with you, so i’ll wait for you to go download it and enable it… Back? Its awesome, right?! My battery has never been better and wakelocks are back in check, just don’t block “Icing” it causes a force close loop on Messaging. Again, this app should be used by anyone running Xposed, no questions asked.

Finally I wanted to really push this audio experience. Boomsound with Dolby were good, but Viper4Android is better. After doing the pre-required steps to install it, I went with the Viper|Atmos flashable zip file from the Nexus 6 subform. I had long used Viper on my M7 and M8 and for good reason. The audio quality components HTC uses are almost unmatched and Viper pushes them to the next level thanks to the sizable overhead that the HTC amps allow. Boomsound now sounds more like a cheap EQ compared to my setup. The audio quality while properly tuned is nothing short of amazing, take some time and learn about the settings and how to properly use them to really benefit from this modification.


It’s only been 1 day now, but I am again in love with my HTC 10. With great power comes great responsibility, likewise rooting and running customizations like Xposed or even changing your ROM isn’t for everyone and it absolutely comes with its warnings. But the power you have at your fingertips is unmatched. HTC knows how to build a device, but only you know how to make it truly yours inside and out. Sometimes it might feel like the developer community is getting edged out as Google implements more features into AOSP that we are familiar with from XDA, that is until you dive head first into the community and really see what these developers are creating.

The most awesome part is that I haven’t even hit the tip of the iceberg with what is possible with the awesome developer community that enables us to make Google’s, HTC’s, Samsung’s, Sony’s or LG’s Android our Android.

Xiaomi Unveils Mi Band 2 with OLED Display; Step Counter, Heart Rate Monitor for $23

Xiaomi has launched the Mi Band 2 in China, the successor to the popular Mi Band launched two days ago. This new gen Mi Band 2 bears an OLED display to display the time, and also features a Step Counter and Heart Rate monitor. The Mi Band 2 also boasts of a 20 day battery life and IP67 rating. The device will go on sale in China from 7th June 2016 for CNY 149 ($23).

Google Fiber Boxes to Receive Google Cast Support

Google has announced they will be rolling out Google Cast support to all Google Fiber customers over the next few weeks. Just like with typical software updates from Google, this will be rolled out slowly in phases. Google asks you to be patient if you don’t have the ability to cast to your TV because “it’s coming soon.”
